Meet the Accord Team

Ruth Davies

Ruth is a Solicitor and Director of Accord Training.  She has over 25 years experience of clinical negligence litigation and health care law.  She has acted on behalf of health organisations as both a Partner in a large commercial practice and subsequently running her own firm acting on behalf of an NHS Trust as a Trust Solicitor.

She has been a Deputy District Judge for 12 years and a Tribunal Judge since 2011.  Ruth has also recently been nominated to deal with Court of Protection applications relating to Deprivation of Liberty.

Ruth has extensive experience of lecturing and training.  She has been a speaker at medico-legal conferences and provided wide-ranging training for health care professionals at all levels on a variety of specialties, including expert witness courses in relation to report-writing and court room skills. Ruth has undertaken university lecturing at both under-graduate and post-graduate level.

Steve Kemp

Steve is the Financial Director and Course Administrator of Accord Training. He has a background in property and finance, having run his own business for many years.

Steve has extensive experience in business administration and as such is responsible for the organisation of all courses provided by Accord Training, both in-house and external.

His expertise in this area ensures the smooth day to day running of all our training courses and he is one of the first points of contact for our delegates in relation to course information and booking enquiries.

Shan Cole

Shan is a Solicitor and Tribunal Judge with a broad range of legal and training experience.  She began her career in private practice specialising in conveyancing, wills and probate and private client work.

More recently, she has worked in higher education, lecturing on both undergraduate and post graduate vocational law courses.  She has also worked freelance for a legal training company.

Shan has trained hundreds of lawyers in the years she has worked in legal education.  She has over 20 years experience in the fields of property, trusts and the law relating to elderly clients, in particular in relation to capacity issues and Lasting Powers of Attorney.

It is her unique background that gives her courses gravitas and makes her training so exceptional.

Paul Hobson

Paul is a barrister who has practised from Iscoed Chambers, Swansea for the past 14 years. Paul is an accomplished advocate with experience of both civil and criminal law. He regularly conducts jury trials for either prosecution or defence and his experience extends to dealing with cases of the utmost gravity ( homicide, serious sexual offences, fraud and drugs conspiracies.)

Paul frequently encounters cases where the evidence of experts or professional witnesses is a central feature.

Paul has experience of education and training, being a pupil supervisor within Iscoed Chambers and an external examiner for Cardiff University in relation to expert witness assessments. This latter role has involved Paul in the assessment of very many expert reports across the fields of civil and criminal law and an assessment of expert witnesses’ performances under cross-examination.

In addition, Paul regularly delivers seminars to solicitors on recent legal developments.

Benjamin Blakemore

Ben is a barrister and mediator who practises from Iscoed Chambers, Swansea.  Ben’s practice is in civil law, with a significant focus on personal injury litigation.

Ben acts for both Claimants and Defendants and has considerable court experience regularly dealing with experts and professional witnesses at court and in conferences.

Ben is well placed to advise as to the content and structure of expert reports as well as practically assist those seeking to improve their ability to  give clear, cogent and persuasive evidence.

Ben has experience of University teaching at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels and he has taught on the professional skills for lawyers course.  He also regularly participates in and delivers seminars to a wide range of professional clients.

 Dafydd Jones

Dafydd is a qualified Independent Social Worker with 20 years experience as a Social Worker in a local authority setting.  He has worked as a Social Worker and Senior Social Work Practitioner with older people across a range of settings including hospital, community settings and residential and nursing care.  Dafydd also has experience of team management in a Community Mental Health Team for older people.  This involved the supervision and management of a range of health and social care professionals on complex assessments, care planning, service delivery and review for people with dementia and older people with late onset mental illness.

Dafydd currently works as a Best Interest Assessor completing best interest assessments for Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards for Local Authorities and Health Boards throughout Wales.

Dafydd is an approved Mental Health Professional and warranted to complete assessments under the Mental Health Act 1983.

As a Designated Lead Manager Dafydd co-ordinated investigations under the Protection of Vulnerable Adults procedures, chairing multi-agency meetings and case conferences.

Dafydd is a first language welsh speaker.
